There is a cheaper tier common in the market called “chemicals-only” service. A chemicals-only tech visits, drops in chlorine, and leaves. No brushing. No vacuuming. No chemistry testing beyond a basic chlorine check. This is why many homeowners with a “pool service” still watch their pool turn green — they don't have full service. Green Pool Recovery: What the Process Involves
Green pool treatment cost depends on pool volume, algae severity, and the number of chemical applications required. The variables that drive the job larger: pool volume above 20,000 gallons, black algae (which roots into plaster and requires mechanical treatment in addition to chemical shock), elevated phosphate loads that must be cleared before chlorine will hold, and water that has been green for weeks rather than days.
Timeline: most Florida green pools require 3–5 days of treatment to clear — shock dosing, algaecide, clarifier, and extended filtration run time. If a pool hasn't cleared within the first treatment window, the next step is phosphate testing. Elevated phosphates are the most common reason chlorine won't hold after the initial shock. Acid Washing: When You Need It and What's Involved
No-drain stain treatment handles widespread light staining, iron staining, and organic surface staining without emptying the pool. Applied directly to the water using chelation and sequestrant chemistry.
Full drain-and-acid-wash is appropriate for severe algae staining that has penetrated plaster, heavy calcium scale from multiple seasons, or black algae rooted into the plaster surface. The process involves complete drainage, muriatic acid application, scrubbing, soda ash neutralization, rinsing, refilling, and full chemistry rebalance from zero. It removes a thin layer of plaster surface each time and should not be done more than every 5–7 years. Florida requires acid wash wastewater to be neutralized before discharge — environmental compliance is part of a properly performed acid wash.

Why CPO Certification Matters for Your Equipment
The Central Florida pool service market ranges from CPO-certified professionals to unlicensed individuals with no formal chemistry training. PHTA Certified Pool Operator certification requires passing a comprehensive examination covering water chemistry, filtration systems, equipment operation, Florida health codes, and chemical safety. It is not a credential anyone can buy.
The practical difference: a CPO-certified tech knows what calcium hardness at 450 ppm does to a salt cell. An unlicensed tech may never test for it. Salt cell replacements, acid washes, and equipment failures driven by chemistry mismanagement are largely preventable — but only if someone is actually testing for the parameters that cause them.
